Software Development
Software development is a major component of Portico’s
technical practice work. The majority of our work in this
area is based around specialist bespoke developments and systems
integration, for which we provide design, development and
support services. An exception to the bespoke work is the
Quartz system which we have developed as a product for awarding
organisations.
We provide excellent value for money in the development of
large and small scale applications. Working with Portico
brings the benefits of rigorous design and development methods
and also provides the security of support and maintenance
services to ensure long term value from your investment.
This approach typically brings a much better return than
reliance on in-house development or the use of contractor
resource for many organisations.
Examples of work in this area are given below:
- We maintain 4 systems in the Houses of
Parliament. Our work has included: the development,
implementation and support of a new ‘Registry Database’ for
the House of Lords; the development and deployment of a
system which records the attendance of members of the house,
the type of attendance and provides front-end and reporting
facilities to support the reimbursement of expenses and the
statistical analysis of attendances; development of a
child-care voucher management system; and taking over
support and enhancement of the court of appeal management
system.
- The development and implementation of a
Cancer Electronic Patient Record (EPR) system for a major
NHS Trust. The Cancer EPR consolidates cancer-specific
clinical information with demographics, pathology, and
radiology information to provide local clinical support and
nationally mandated data sets.
- Development of SMS messaging for NHS
Trusts to provide appointment reminders from data held in
operational systems.
- Providing automated data entry solutions
to reduce administrative costs and improve data quality for
NHS primary care and community services.
- Specialist integration with ASP web-based
applications.
- Development of specialist data extraction
tools/processes, for example to provide reporting from
legacy systems and where application system vendors do not
adequately support data access.
- Systems integration work, including the
development and support of various types of interface
between operational systems, for example to support
streamlined booking, registration and billing processes.
- Development, for awarding organisations,
of a national web-based on-line facility to enable
authorised users to search a large bank of syllabus ‘units’
(standalone elements of achievement) which stakeholders
(typically tutors working in colleges of further education)
can log onto and use to help design new courses.
The Quartz system has been developed to support the
management of qualifications and other programmes of learning.
It provides a comprehensive range of functionality for awarding
bodies to support all aspects of their operations. We
continuously develop Quartz to both enhance its capabilities
generally, to meet changing regulatory demands, integrate with
new national systems; and to deliver specialist (bespoke)
modules for Quartz clients to meet specific business needs.
